I'd like to apologize for the delay, I was really busy yesterday and was unable to upload this post. Please forgive <3 Thank you. ~Squidetor
Another mascot that you may remember back in the golden era of Nickelodeon was Stick Stickly. Sure, he was probably the least creative character with little personality and some type of anxiety disorder, but we still hold him in our hearts. For a popsicle stick with glues on googly eyes and a yellow play-doh nose (and who knows what his mouth was made out of, more play-doh maybe?), he was probably one of the most memorable characters of 90's Nickelodeon.
Before we go into his history, what most people don't know is that Stick Stickly is voiced by Paul Christie. Don't know who that is? Well, he's also the voice of this guy right here:
That's right, Moose A. Moose. The yellow moose from Noggin that appeared in their various bumpers (future post coming soon discussing Moose and Zee from Noggin.)
Anyhow, back on topic.
Stick Stickly first appeared in Nickelodeon bumpers back in 1994 (footage not found unfortunately, but it has been confirmed Stick made an appearance before this big breakthrough in 95), and the Summer of 1995 during a block on Nickelodeon called "Nick in the Afternoon", where Stick himself would appear in bumpers and promos in between shows. Unfortunately, there is not much footage of Stick's first appearances, except for a few select clips online. The block really was only preselected Nicktoons and other regular programming.
As you can see, his early design was made pretty sloppily compared to his final design from 1996-1998.
Around 1996, that's when his popularity began to strike. His show (as far as my knowledge goes due to lack of footage or information) was revamped, with more characters such as Twiggy, Holly B. Wood (if I recall correctly), Stick's mother, and Stick's twin brother, Wood Knot who had a New York accent and loved riddles. Stick also was involved in many segments such as "U-Dip" where Stick was dipped in some substance of the viewer's choice, "U-Stump" (I believe was the name) in which Stick was given a riddle by a viewer and Stick would attempt to figure out a riddle (should have switched places with WoodKnot in this situation, heh), and the most important, "U-Pick", where the viewers chose what shows they wanted to see, ranging from regular Nickelodeon content, to shows/episodes that hadn't aired in years, to even content from Nick at Nite!
There were also many specials that Stick starred in, such as "Oh Brother" in which Stick travels to New York City, specifically the Twin Towers in order to find his long lost twin brother, Woodknot (I'm surprised no one based a Creepypasta on that instead of the shitty existing one on Creepypasta wiki where Stick kills people and other bullshit like that). Another notable example of one of Stick's specials would be "Stuck", a winter-themed special.
Oh, and how could we forgot Stick's little jingle. "Write to me, Stick Stickly, P.O. Box 963, New York City, New York State, 10108!" God, if I can't remember a single math equation from years of Algebra class, and yet I still remember that little jingle to this day, then that really shows the impact Stick left on us... or maybe there's something wrong with me and I'm just shit at Algebra. God damn it, ADHD...
Oh, and don't forget about those contests Stick hosted...
Here's a few other clips from Nick in the Afternoon featuring Stick.
After December of 98, unfortunately, Stick Stickly was thrown into the waste basket and replaced by "Henry and June's Nicktoon Summer Jam", never to be seen again...
Then, the internet came. Reviving his legacy, with or without Nick shows in between. His legacy was so big, that Lemon Demon created a song based off Stick Stickly.
Then, a miracle happened in 2011. That's right, only a few months into The 90's Are All That, and the man, or... stick, is back in action.
Stick returned just in time for The 90's Are All That, specifically the new "U-Pick with Stick" segment that aired every Friday from October 7, 2011 to December 2012, then appeared for some other 90's Nick events such as '90s Game Show Events. After that, Paul Christie, the voice of Stick, temporarily left Nick, and we all once again assumed that Stick was gone for good once again... that is, until he came back not too long after, and Stick still appears for certain events on TeenNick's block, The Splat.
Well, that's really all there is to it with Stick Stickly! Tomorrow, I may do a brief history of Nickelodeon Studios, and the impact it left on both the 90's generation, and our present generation as well, so stay tuned!
We may even have a few interviews coming along
(Just for the Hell of it, here's some images from Nick Magazine promoting Stick Stickly:)
God, Holly's early design was creepy... those eyes follow you like a painting... well, one of them at least. The other looks like it's following the ceiling... eh, you get the point.
